Virtuous Education: Making Us Righteous & Virtuous
“The
whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into window”
Sydney J Harris
Education is an act of
learning things around us. It helps us to understand easily and makes balance
throughout the whole life in every aspect. Education is the process of
facilitating learning. It is the first and foremost right of every human being.
Without education we are incomplete and our lives are useless. Education helps
us to set a goal and go ahead by working on that goal throughout the life. It
improves our knowledge, skill, confidence level, habits, values, beliefs and
personality. Although education is very comprehensive
in nature but we cannot delimit it to formal education. It includes all aspects
of education ie. Value education, holistic education and learning through day
to day experiences etc. To make our learners morally and ethically sound we
need to impart value education. It helps to develop social, moral, religious,
spiritual and ethical values among the learners. The Secondary Education
Commission 1952-53 laid special emphasis on the following values in the
formation of character of the students: Efficiency, Good Temper, Cooperation,
Integrity, and Discipline.
“Aim
for success, not perfection. Never give up your right to be wrong, because then
you will lose the ability to
learn new things and move forward with your life. Remember that fear always
lurks behind perfectionism.”
David M. Burns
Value education is the process by which people give values to others. It
can be an activity that can take place in any organization during which people
are assisted by others, who may be teachers, parents or any older, in a
position of authority or are more experienced, to make explicit those values
underlying their own behavior, assess the effectiveness of these values and
associated behavior for their own and others. It helps us to face challenges of
life.
“Live as were to if
you die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”
Mahatma Gandhi talks not about value education but also emphasis on
holistic education for learners. Holistic education is a philosophy of
education based on the premise that each person finds identity, meaning and
purpose in life through connections to the community, to the natural world, and
to humanitarian values such as compassion and peace. It aims to call forth from
people an intrinsic reverence for life and a passionate love of learning. In
holistic education, the teacher is seen less as person of authority who leads
and control but rather is seen as “a friend, a mentor, a facilitator or an
experienced companion in their journey of education. Schools should be seen as
places where students and adults work towards a mutual goal. Cooperation is the
norm, rather than competition. The most
important function of education at any level is to develop the personality of
the individual and the significance of his life to himself and to others. If
someone is going down the wrong road, he doesn’t need motivation to speed him
up. What he need is education to turn him around. It opens the closed door for
a person to the various opportunities of achieving better prospects in life. It
not only promotes career growth but also moral growth. It teaches equality to
people by giving equal opportunities to men and women by removing gender
biasness, and to study with the students of other religion by developing
patience and respect for other religion. In today’s world education is a need
to survive, it not only gives you a better life style but it also teaches you
to value your surroundings by building up the self- confidence of a person
about his life and himself.
