'Work Life Balance - Need of the Hour'
Prior to globalization work life and personal life were used to be considered two entirely different domains, but globalization, rise in work pressure and COVID-19 have changed the thought process. COVID-19 has brought a drastic change in working timings of employees. Extended working hours and frequent changes in timing is a challenge for work life balance. Maintaining work life balance Is a tough task to be accomplished in present scenario especially while we all are confronting with pandemic time i.e. COVID-19. The term work life balance was coined in the early 80s as it was becoming very difficult for working females to take care of their kids, those who were dependent on mothers. Work- life balance refers to effective management to balance between the workplace life and personal life of employees, which includes the social responsibilities of an individual employee as well. Poor work life balance may lead to some very serious consequences and may badly affect the organizational effectiveness and productivity. Hence work life balance is going to be the area of major concern for HR professionals to deal with for the success of organizations.
Work life balance provides an opportunity to learn for self-management, self-control and for the development and management of professional skills. Excessive work pressure on employees gives rise to the cost of healthcare and medication, as today's professionals face next level work pressure and employers have very high expectations from employees, which impacts their health badly in absence of proper work life balance. For today's professionals high pressure for profitability and organizational growth is also a matter of concern, which disturbs the work life balance. Imbalanced work life affects the engagement level of an employee which leads to the delivery of poor quality products and services to the customers. On the contrary if the efforts of an employee or professional are valued by the management it will help in maintaining work life balance and it will assure the personal as well as professional success of the individual employee. Organizations like Google are maintaining a better work life balance for their employees. Around 55% of employees at Google contribute 8 hours or less, while around 10% of them have a very long working day, in some cases more than 12 hrs, majority of Google employees are satisfied with their work life balance and they all are away from burnout feeling satisfied and working happily.
Hence work life balance is the need of the hour for the success of organizations and employees as well.
