Multiple Disability

The multiple handicapped children have a combination of two or more physical and mental disabilities. A person with disability means a person suffering from any of the conditions relating to physical and mental impairment including autism, cerebral palsy, mental retardation or a combination of any two or more such conditions that interfere with his normal functioning and social adaptation.

Types of Multiple Disabilities

The Physical Multiple Handicapped Children- The Physical Multiple Handicapped Children included in this category are all those who suffer from two or more physical impairment or deafness, or deafness with blindness etc. The blind, deaf or speech handicap children can be of average or above average intelligence. But because of the psychological repercussions of their hearing or seeing disability, these children have special personal and educational needs and may pose new challenges to teachers, educators and parents.

The Mentallybretared and otherwise disabled children- This category includes the children of below average intellectual functioning having I.Q. between 80-89; the slow learners whose I.Q. ranges between 70-79; and the mentally handicapped whose I.Q. is 70 or below. Besides having intellectual impairment, the children of multiple disabilities also have impairment of physical domain like vision impairment hearing deficit or speech handicap etc. As the combination of mental and physical handicaps increases the intensity of disabilities as a whole , such cases pose more acute challenges to meet the special needs of these children. Some scholars also include autism , emotional problems and problems of deviant behaviour in this category because most of the children with emotional and behaviour problems generally do not possess any physical deformity. But one point of differentiating these children from mentally handicaps is that children depicting problems may or may not have any handicap of intellectual functioning.

It can be concluded that a multiple handicap child is one who deviates from the average or normal child in more than one domains related to physical , mental and social characteristics to the extent that he requires a modification of school practices or special educational services or supplementary instruction in order to develop his potentials to the optimum level.
