He was a thinker ahead of his time and wrote some landmark judgments. The case of Maneka Gandhi paved the way to read the plain words "Right to life" and "Personal liberty" to mean many human rights now, thus expanding Article 21 of the Constitution. That the Government cannot put fetters on the rights of citizens, nor should courts get unduly alarmed. However, this judgment started focus of courts, society and Governments on respecting and ensuring rights and freedoms of individuals. In Ratlam Municipality case , he started a trend for Judges to leave the courtroom and go out there to see with their own eyes the situation on the ground.
