Classroom Discipline – What a teacher can do?

In a classroom, discipline is a tool used by a teacher to make sure that theclass routine is followed, rules and regulations are enforced, and the students are learning in a conducive learning environment. Classroom behavior can be analysed seeing the reasons for the behaviour, the teacher’s attitude towards the behaviour, and the effect of the behaviour on the learning process. For example, the amount of noise in a class may not be so important as the cause of that noise; what is confusion in one situation maybe orderly procedure in another. The significant question is whether all members of the group are progressing towards the educational goals.Following ways will help Teachers establish desirable behaviour habits in students:

1. Each people should be stimulated by a plan of action that will result in the achievement of a worthwhile goals

2.Classroom rules and the reason behind those rules should be explained by the teacher.

3.Learners should know that any infringement of rules and regulations warrants some kind of penalty.

4.Students should not be expected to remain quiet for the sole purpose of being orderly.

5Classroom condition should encourage pupils to corporate.

6. Habits essential to the attainment of self-discipline should become automatic as early as possible.

7. Pupil activity should be the aim of every classroom teacher.

8. School and classroom living should reflect out-of-class life situations so that class activities will help prepare young people to participate in social group activity in or outsidethe school.

9. Engaging in desirable forms of activity is more important in a group situation than maintaining complete silence.

10. Activities should be planned for leaners in accordance with their special talents and interest.

11. Pupil conduct should be the joint responsibility of the pupils and the teacher, the teacher necessarily having the authority in the group.

12. The teacher should place responsibility upon pupil individually and collectively to the extent of their demonstrated ability to assume it.

Without discipline, there can be no learning. As the basic goal of discipline is to receive most from their education. If students constantly disrupt the class, it will affect not only teacher but the other students also. If a student does not follow the rules, S/he willmiss out the valuable learning opportunities. Above discussed ways will stimulate pupils to strive toward the achievement of self-discipline.
