Why Labor Day is celebrated on May 1st ?
In many countries of the world,
International Labor Day 2020 is celebrated on 01 May. Not even only India, but
almost eighty countries across the globe have a national holiday on Labour Day.
It is also known as 'May Day'. It is commemorate to encourage and stimulate
international labor unions. This day is celebrated by laborers and workers of unorganized
or organized sectors. The working class assembles in big rallies on this day.
Mazdoor Jagriti programs are broadcast on Labor Day by broadcasting mediums
like TV, newspaper, and radio, and big politicians make many important
announcements for the welfare of the working class on this day.
The sudden lockdown imposed on the migrant laborers
due to Corona virus in the country has been the most heavy. When they came to
know that the factories and business which used to be a source of livelihood
for them, have not been closed for how many days, then they started sneaking to
return home. It is necessary to have effective laborers for economic progress.
May Day indicates various welfare works for the benefit of the workers. To
celebrate the achievements of laborers, International Workers' Day is
celebrated annually as an official holiday all over the world.
The beginning of celebrating International Workers
'Day is considered from May 1, 1886, when the workers' unions of America went
on strike for not keeping the work time more than 8 hours. The Labor Farmers
Party of India in India started the Labor Day on 01 May 1923 in Madras. Although,
it was celebrated as Madras Day at that time. In the early 19th century, eight
hours of work and better facilities were restored for the workers. This date
was chosen by Second International, an organization of socialist and communist
political parties. At that time, on May 4, 1886, the day was set to celebrate
the Haymarket Market in Chicago.
Labor Day in India began in Chennai on 01 May 1923.
The Labor Farmers Party of Hindustan in India started it in Madras on 01 May
1923. This was the occasion when the red color flag was first used as a symbol
of Labor Day. The workers were organized all over the world and were raising
their voice against the atrocities and exploitation happening with them.
