Food and Youth

Our food makes us what we are, how we think and how we conduct ourselves amongst others. Every food habit is influenced by a set of factors prevailing in the environment of an individual. In the initial years of life, we take these basic habits from our family especially parents, out of which mothers play the most pivotal role. Later on, our own observation and personal encounters with food and influences of our social circle decide upon our food habits.
There has been a sea difference between the food habits of our ancestors and today’s generation. This difference has emerged as a result of vast availability of a variety of food items which are easily available all across. The youth of today gets easily lured away by something called ‘Fast Food’ which is fast in all aspects. It is easily available, handy to eat and satisfies hunger in a short period of time. However, it brings with itself a lot of adverse effects which get hidden under the layer of the aesthetics and tastes that are added to it to make it lucrative.
We can all witness the level of aggression, short temperedness and poor concentration as problems of the young generation. In addition to this, issues like disordered eating, weight and health problems and frequent psychological disorders are commonly seen amongst the youngsters. Several research studies have concluded that the pace with which teenagers are feeding themselves with junk food, the future of the nations will be dark and gloomy in terms of health standards.
Therefore, healthy eating to ensure healthy thoughts and healthy social conduct is the need of the hour. Regular exercise, right quality and quantity of food and consuming more greens and fruits are some of the ways to be incorporated in the lifestyle of the youth as soon as possible. Health related counseling can be used to motivate and change the attitude of this millennial generation. With team efforts of parents, schools, social institutions and organizations, there is a strong possibility of leading the whole ‘Food and Youth’ culture toward a better tomorrow.
