Models of Teaching

Teaching is a social process which aims at maximizing learning. Teaching and learning are related to each other in a bipolar manner which means that where there is teaching, there is learning but where there is learning it is not necessary that it is the result of teaching.
Definition of Teaching Model:
Teaching models are instructional design which describe the process of specifying and producing particular environmental situations which causes the students to interact in such a way that specific changes occur in their behaviour.
Fundamental Elements of Teaching Models:
·         Focus: This element is related to the planning phase of teaching and all the other elements revolve around this. It includes the objectives that are to be realized by teaching.
·         Syntax: In this element, teaching strategies and techniques are selected and their sequence is determined so that suitable learning situations may be created and objectives are achieved.
·         Social System: This element is related to interaction in the class. This element includes the desired activities between the teacher and pupils and mutual relationship between them is determined.
·         Support System: This element determines the effectiveness of syntax and social system. Here behaviour is evaluated objectively to determine the extent to which the objectives have been achieved. If objectives are not realized, modification in these two elements is made.
Classification of Teaching Models:
·         Socrates Teaching Model: This model was founded by Socrates, he was of opinion that no knowledge can be imparted from outside. it is already hidden in the soul of the child.
·         Impression Model: This model was propounded by John Locke, he believed that the mind of the child is like a blank slate at the time of birth and the experiences provided to him through teaching put a direct impression on his mind.
·         Basic Teaching Model: This teaching model was propounded by Robert Glasser in 1962. In this model, teaching objectives are realized by using psychological principles.
·         Taba’s Teaching Model: This model is related to teacher training programme. This model helps the pupil teacher in developing thinking power and skill
