Information & communication technology in Healthcare

Information and communication technology (ICT) can be used broadly in four areas – education, research, referral and data management. When ICT is used in the field of medical education, it is likely that high quality education will be available seamlessly across India. ICT has been able to transform the medical landscape by bringing about a paradigm shift in medical research in India. It offers a wide range of opportunities from traditional clinical research to modern synthetic biology-based research. Work related to problems such as cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment can benefit from interdisciplinary collaboration. Such benefits have been enjoyed by physicians a few decades ago, when MRI and nuclear imaging were integrated into medicine.

Over the years it has been exciting to see how the integration of technology and innovative tools can improve public service delivery. The development of India Stack and JAM (Jan-Dhan, Aadhaar and Mobile) can be seen as examples.

During the COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the need to promote rapid digitization in the health sector. Recently we saw a mission “National Digital health Mission” which can be shown as a major contribution in digital Health activity. In addition, the cost of treatment for chronic diseases is constantly increasing and currently there is a huge shortage of doctors all over the world. As such, digital health services can help drive the transformation needed to meet the goal of healthcare access for all.

Through Digital Health services we can have several things like

Monitoring the spread of epidemics: The process of data collection and sharing will be greatly accelerated through digitization of health services so that once the data is available (for record and analysis) in case of any infectious disease, this can help provide information about disease transmission and geospatial coverage to the system.

Innovative use of digital tools such as deep learning and cloud emergency response algorithms have greatly helped healthcare workers working in the emergency rooms of hospitals during this pandemic.

Patient Friendly Health System: with the help of ICT the health system helps patient also, Deployment of AI tools for all aspects of the health system will substantially reduce delays and result in reduction in healthcare costs.

The digital transformation of healthcare is currently one of the main priorities of efforts to address issues such as limited availability of resources, a diverse demographic mix and the urgent need to increase medical access.

Preventive care: Emerging technologies not only accelerate the development of new drugs, but in many cases they also offer an entirely new class of therapy, such as digital therapeutics, which is known as DTx. DTx are basically software-based solutions that can treat lifestyle-related illness or disorder.

Helpful in clinical trials: The power of data can be harnessed in the digital health sector which will aid in the analysis of samples and similarly images can be used to make better clinical decisions.

Thus, with all these above points we can say, the digital health system can see a massive impact on the delivery of health care and provides an opportunity to tackle the next challenge of the health sector by shifting the focus from treatment to prevention.

Another achievement in this field could be seen in the form of Telemedicine, The system already has a strong base of information technology and indigenous satellite communication technology with trained manpower. Taking forward the efforts, Telemedicine helping to provide specialized healthcare facilities in the most remote parts of the country. Also telemedicine is expected to provide facilities for tele-diagnosis especially in the areas of Cardiology, Pathology, Dermatology and Radiology, apart from effective conduct of Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes.
