Depression - “The state of mind”

When a person experiences failure in the path of his life or when he feels crushed because of some ups and down that came inevitably in life or when one has to cope with great challenges, but resources seem to be insufficient or some other reasons that are not in hand, then he starts getting negative thoughts, which come and go occasionally. Slowly this mental state pushes the thought process and people start seeing the world through the negative mindset. Such thoughts inevitably slow down their lives. Even activities which were once pleasure for one, seem to be ceased now. The prolonged feeling of loneliness or loss of interest can lead to a mental state, called depression. According to WHO , depression is a worldwide disease, approximately 264 million people are affected and nearly 8,00,000 people dies by committing suicide every year. Depression causes a wide range of behaviour and physiological symptoms. Like it ruins the appetite, in some cases too much eating is also associated with depression, It also chews the memory and concentration. Other than that, various physical pains like muscular pains, headache, stomachache and backache are usual without having any pathological reasons. In social situations, such a mental state, sniff away all the confidence. The biggest fear is that the people may judge his / her mental state. The person goes through excessive feeling of guilt, regret or helplessness and feels totally isolated from everything and everyone. They loses all the joy of the life and begins to question "what's the point of having it?”. Such state of mind may sometimes link them to death and suicidal tendencies. Although depression is not a pathological disease, but sometimes, it is more terrible than diseases. Depression is suffering our own brain, there is no issue in surrounding. If it is left unaware, then only it will harm our health. Though, there is no silver bullet or magic pill to overcome this, but It can be treated with the help of knowledge, patience and discipline. Medication is not the ultimate cure for depression. However, medication helps some and others need different approaches altogether. Being emotionally genuine and authentic to close ones can be an absolute game changer. Regular exercise & meditation are also proven as an effective antidepressant in case of mild and moderate depression. Getting thoughts on papers can also be cathartic and often insightful. It also keeps track of things that one should be grateful for. No matter how bad life gets, but right step can reevaluate and simplify life, it teaches to embrace the challenges, rather than running away from them. The problems and situations will always be a part of life, but one must have courage to derive positivity from situation and win over it.
