REGULATING OTT PLATFORM

Internet and technology have become an inevitable part of our lives and therefore ubiquitous.

This article is centred on Over Top (OTT) platforms that permit visual entertainment through

the usage of the web. The present trend intent on the utilization of OTT platforms for which

the quantity of users increases exponentially in our country. A sudden surge has been

recorded in its growth, thanks to the pandemic which made it a necessity to keep ourselves

occupied and entertained remotely and keeps our mental health enacted. But this concept has

been misinterpreted by some of the content creators as they are using this mode to create

disharmony and chaos amongst the public intentionally or unintentionally. This paper sheds a

light on the content regulation of OTT platforms. A three-tier mechanism is introduced for

grievance addressing by the government under the head of "Guidelines for intermediaries and

digital media ethics code" for proper monitoring. Even after mounting such an efficient

system still, some movies and web shows are hurting people or being a reason for disturbance

in the mob. This thesis tries to analyse the impact of accelerating OTT video streaming

service’s viewership in lockdown. It frames both the positive and negative attitudes of Indian

people towards web shows available on OTTs. This paper is an attempt to explore the grey

area of OTT platforms and attainable outcomes and suggestions that can be brought in the

aspect of censorship and media laws. Such regulating practices are just not practised in India

but in other countries as well. We concluded that the content should be created in

consideration of public interest and public welfare.
