NEED FOR PRISON REFORMS

With the development of human rights approach there is a shift in reforming the prisoners in place of punishing them Reformation and rehabilitation of the prisoners is a matter of utmost concern. Indian prison system is still being governed by age old Prison Act.  Indian prison system has been continuously criticized for its various loopholes like overcrowding, low health facility, lack of proper training staff, insufficient medical facilities, common ward for different population etc. These problems poses serious question on the dignity of the prison inmates. Condition of the prisoners in Indian jail is in an awfully bad. Multiple committees appointed by the government have recommended various reforms to improve the living conditions of the prison inmates, however almost negligible implementation has been done by the state based on these reports. Many reforms were also suggested by Indian judiciary but nothing concrete was carried out. India prisons are still suffering from so many problems and we are not able to provide a system where we can protect the human rights of the prison inmates.
