Equity & Equality in Education
To
provide education to all the members of society is mandatory, so we can develop
our nation as well as raise the standard of living of all citizens. For
achieving this goal equity and equality both are essential. Both equity which
is also known as fairness and equality strategies are used for efforts to
establish justice. Educational equity is dependent on the two main factors. The
primary factor or variable is decency, which induces that factors explicitly
related to one's very own conditions ought not to restrain with the capability
of scholarly achievement. The second important factor is inclusion, which refers
to a comprehensive standard that applies to everyone in a certain education
system.
Meaning of Equity &
Equality
Equity
means giving everyone equal opportunities to succeed. Equality is related to
treating everyone equally. Justice - The path of attainment cannot be achieved
by treating everyone equally. Achieving this is possible only by fair dealing
with everyone according to their circumstances, such as
Example of Equality
- Establishment of computer lab in all government schools of a community with
equal number of hours and equal hours of work during school hours.
Example of Equity
- Establishment of some such computer lab near low income population where a
large number of computers and printers are available. And remain open till
late. So that students can access it who are unable to get the facility of
computer and internet at home.
Equity
vs. Equality
Often, the terms "equity" and
"equality" are interchanged when referring to educational equity.
Although these two terms are similar but there are some important distinctions
between them.
Equity
Value perceives that some are at a
bigger burden than others and targets making up for these people groups’
adversities and handicaps to guarantee that everybody can achieve a similar
kind of sound way of life.
Equality
According to the American Library
Association equality is: “access to channels of communication and sources of
information that is made available on even terms to all a level playing field
is derivative from the concept of fairness as uniform dissemination, where
everyone is entitled to the equal or same level of access and can avail
themselves if they so select.”
In this meaning of correspondence nobody
has an uncalled for advantage. Everybody is given equivalent chances and
openness and are without then to do what they please with it.
Both
these resolutions of gender equity and gender equality are mutually related,
but there is a difference in the meaning of both. Gender equality is a state
where everyone gets equal opportunities and rights without gender
discrimination.
It
is a political resolution that emphasizes the establishment of equality between
persons of a different gender. This term of gender equality can be used in
different ways and its meanings may also vary.
The meaning of gender equality can be assumed
as the equality or differentiation of the behavior of men and women. Therefore,
gender equality is a system where equality and equality between men and women
and the roles played by them are given equal importance by society.
According
to the Indian Constitution, gender equality is a basic right. It empowers each
state of the country to make laws and policies to adopt a positive attitude in
favor of women, according to it. India has raised its voice against every kind
of discrimination against women by many international conventions and human
rights organizations etc. and has made a special place for them, apart from
gender discrimination. As a result of the 1993 amendment of the Indian
Constitution, more than 10 lakh women were elected to the local panchayat,
where 1/3 reserved seats were required. Passing the Fetal Testing Techniques
Act in 1994 is also an important step in ending gender discrimination. Under
this act, conducting an investigation and female feticide is a legal offense.
Doctors are also prohibited from doing so, otherwise their licenses will be
canceled. In 2001, the National Policy for the Advancement and Development of
Women was announced to empower women in government, but even today, in view of
gender discrimination, new policies and resolutions are needed to encourage the
dignity and rights of women.
Equity and equality both holds important
position in education. It is very necessary for the education system to make
the curriculum keeping in mind both aspects. A country can be considered
developed when it truly follows this. Not only in India, but in all the
countries of the world equity is necessary for every marginalized section.
