BIOPLASTICS: A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO REDUCE PLASTIC POLLUTION

Bioplastic is a type of plastic which is biodegradable as well as eco-friendly plastic that is made of renewable natural resources. Bioplastics can be boon in removing the plastic waste problem which is contaminating our planet and causing pollution to the environment. We may better say that bioplastic (BPL) is pollution free and zero waste alternatives to traditionally used plastic.

Types of Bioplastics (BPL):

1.                 Starch based BPL These are used for the making wrappers for packaging, biodegradable polyesters etc.

2.                 Cellulose based BPL- These used for making thermoplastics and also for packaging.

3.                 Protein based BPL – These are used for making body panels of automobiles.

4.                 Hydroxy Alkanoates (Polyesters) – for example polythene like poly hydroxyl butyrates.

Characteristics of Bioplastics (BPL):

1.                 Bioplastics are similar to conventional plastic, equally resistant and versatile.

2.                 They are made from biomaterials such as corn starch, poly lactic acids etc.

3.                 Bioplastics are fully decomposable and can be degraded in microbial environment.

ADVANTAGES

1.              They reduce carbon footprint

2.              They prove energy savings in production

3.              They use only renewable raw materials also they do not contain any harmful additive.

4.              Their production follows zero waste technology that is no hazardous waste production.

BIOPLASTICS (BPL)-USES

Bioplastics are used in Packaging, Food Service, medical profession, Aerospace and automotive sectors and also in cosmetic industry because of its variable applications and properties.

Hence the bioplastics advancement and progression would be a promising solution of the plastic pollution issues. Notwithstanding, public participation and mindfulness is equally required in effective longer-term change against plastic contamination.
