APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY FOR SUSTAINABLE RURAL DEVELOPMENT


Appropriate technology is most basic and simplest technology to achieve the intended purpose with limited available resources. For developing nations like India, with huge population residing in rural areas; appropriate technology is boon for the society.
This technology is basically labour-intensive technology rather than depending on energy-based technology. Technology basically employs use of locally available material and natural resources as input. This technology is best option for the rural infrastructural development, energy production, distribution, rural road construction, water supply and sanitation.
For rural house projects, locally available material and labour are utilised, which is sustainable as well as environmentally friendly option. Use of aggregate, murram, kanker for the construction of village roads, can be a good option where there is no connectivity, since bitumen road require processing, transportation and construction charges.
For potable water supply, Appropriate techniques is construction of infiltration wells, galleries as these include development of available water source, with minimum conveyance charges. For sanitary and domestic waste disposal, soak pits and bio- toilets is possible method as using waste, bio-fuel can be generated. Construction of simple bio-gas plant can be done as rural waste is best source of energy.
The Appropriate technology is most suitable option for socio-economical development of rural area, which are still not having sufficient basic facilities.
