APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY FOR SUSTAINABLE RURAL DEVELOPMENT
Appropriate technology is most basic
and simplest technology to achieve the intended purpose with limited available
resources. For developing nations like India, with huge population residing in
rural areas; appropriate technology is boon for the society.
This technology is basically
labour-intensive technology rather than depending on energy-based technology.
Technology basically employs use of locally available material and natural
resources as input. This technology is best option for the rural infrastructural
development, energy production, distribution, rural road construction, water
supply and sanitation.
For rural house projects, locally
available material and labour are utilised, which is sustainable as well as environmentally
friendly option. Use of aggregate, murram, kanker for the construction of
village roads, can be a good option where there is no connectivity, since
bitumen road require processing, transportation and construction charges.
For potable water supply,
Appropriate techniques is construction of infiltration wells, galleries as
these include development of available water source, with minimum conveyance
charges. For sanitary and domestic waste disposal, soak pits and bio- toilets
is possible method as using waste, bio-fuel can be generated. Construction of
simple bio-gas plant can be done as rural waste is best source of energy.
The Appropriate technology is most
suitable option for socio-economical development of rural area, which are still
not having sufficient basic facilities.
