Co-operative learning is a modern educationalapproach. Its aim is to minimize the occurrence of unpleasant situation and
maximizes the learning and contentment that results from working on a high
performance group. The main objective works behind this approach is to organize
various classroom activities into academic and social learning experiences. It
is also identified by several other names like group learning, team learning,
peer assisted learning, small group learning and collaborative learning. This
approach mainly focuses on students that they learn more by doingactivities rather
than by simply listening and watching. It is based on psychological principals
and supported by cognitive psychologists. Co-operation enhances learning in
several ways like it facilitate positive interdependence, individuals
accountability, by developing interpersonal and social skills etc. there are
three commonly recognized types of cooperative learning groups i.e. Informal
Co-operative learning groups, Formal Co-operative learning groupsand
Co-operative base groups. This modern approach has several advantages for
teachers and students in context to their teaching and learning. It is equally
suited to students having different ability levels. It promotes positive
interaction and friendship in the group. It leads to better academic
performance as compared to traditional method and it is proven by various
researches. It serves as a means of teaching students the way to live
cooperatively in a democratic society. Moreoverworking in groups helps in
inculcating qualities in students like team spirit, leadership tolerance, we
feeling etc.
It is a learner centred modern educational approach
which is highly suited to students of all levels and possessing different
abilities. It is not only beneficial to students but for teachers as well. It
helps in developing and inculcating values in students and to enhance their
scholastic and co-scholastic performance.
