Meritocracy: Journey from Equality to Equity of Values
Education is globally recognized as the
main agent in the creation of progressive society. It enables an individual to
think globally, to act rationally and to draw conclusions logically. Education
system is viewed from different angles by different philosophers or thinkers.
Some consider it as mode of change while some take it as seed of imbibing
values in child. It not only prepares individual for vocations but also helps
him to inculcate progressive values.
In today’s age of Artificial
Intelligence, the domain of value education is shrinking as technology is
superseding the human actions. Due to this dominance, the values which were and
are the identification of Indian society are being faded away. Today’s
education system is lagging behind technology for making a child
technologically sound as well as socially and culturally rich individual
because we impart education to child who is more wealthy in place of who is
more capable. We keep on feeding the rich mind who does not want to study in
place of poor minds who actually want to prosper. We give opportunities to
already advantaged sections in place of actually needy sections because we talk
about Equity but in reality we only practice equality. This thin line between
these two terms can be vanished from Meritocracy.
Meritocracy is the practice of
supporting and valuing the talent, capability and creativity of an individual.
It favors the poor minds with creative thoughts and sound values over rich
minds with generalized ideas and poor values. It is mindset of inculcating the
values of honesty, transparency and hard work. It makes students studying and
teachers teaching in classrooms to work out of passion not out of tension. When
a person knows he is valued because of his abilities, then he is bound to work
ethically. It gives a sense of responsibility to perform fair with no
alternative of cheating and mischief.
Thus in the world of transparency, we
should also practice some transparent value system, i.e. system of Meritocracy.
It will not only bring zeal to work but also zeal to react logically, fairly
and rationally because
“People should be judged on their
abilities and talents.”
