Adjustment – An important virtue for success

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, or the most Intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change”Charles Darwin

Darwin’s theory of natural selection introduced the concept of adjustment. Man has tremendous capacity to adapt to new situations. The problem of adjustment arises due to the conflict between the demands of the individual and the demand of the environment.
Maladjustment arises when our needs are not fulfilled due to the adverse condition imposed by the environment.
Adjustment is an achievement and a process. It is an achievement when an individual can efficiently perform his duties in any circumstances, as a process it depends on the person – his interaction with the external environment and external pressure.
Mental health plays an important role, “mental health is the ability to adjust satisfactorily to the various strains of the environment that we meet in life and mental hygiene is the means to assure this adjustment.”
Maladjusted individuals always go against the norms, they think that there is always injustice meted out on them, they feel people are jealous of them and they are deprived of human rights.
A mentally healthy person is adaptive to the changingconditions of the environment, they participate in social activities in spite of stress, and they are well contented, they abide by the norms, rules and laws happily.
He self evaluates himself and improves. He is professionally devoted to tasks assigned.
For the society and nation to progress it is important that the citizens attain good mental health and overcome maladjustment by adapting to the changing conditions of the environment, learn to be accommodative and participate in social activities for nation building.
