CSIR PLANS TO INDEX GENOME
A project has been prepared by the Council of
Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to index the genome of India's young
students under a project. The purpose of this project is to educate the next
generation of students about the usefulness of genomics.
According to molecular biology,
genes are genetic substances, through which the properties of organisms reach
from one generation to another. The sequence of all genes present in the DNA of
any organism is called genome. There are approximately 80,000-1,00,000 genes in
the human genome. The genomic study is called genomics. The genome project is a scientific project, whose goal is
to find out the whole genome sequence of a creature. With the participation of
the US Department of Energy (USDE) and the National Institute of Health (NIH),
the Human Genome Project started in 1988. It was officially launched in 1990.
Later it took the world-wide look. At present, about 250 laboratories of
eighteen countries are involved in this. In fact, under the government leadership, a genome index of about 10,000 Indian people has been indexed under
the project being run in genome sequencing, this project will be a part of this
sequence.
Key points of the plan
· Under this project initiated by CSIR, a genome sample of about 1,000 rural youth will be collected and indigenous genetic mapping will be indexed by their genome.
· On a global level, many countries have indexed the genome samples of the citizens of their country to determine the unique genetic traits and sensitivity etc., for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
· For the first time in India, a large scale study of genome samples is being collected.
· Generally, the collection of genome-samples was done by representatives of population diversity of the country, but this time sampling of people who are college students (both men and women) and students of biological science or biology.
Genome sequencing by CSIR will be prepared on the basis of blood sample. Various camps will be organized in different states for this. Those who are involved in genome sequencing camp will be given a report. Apart from this, they will also be given the sensitivity information of their genes.
