Equality and Equity in Education
“Equality of opportunity is not enough. Unless
we create an environment where everyone is guaranteed some minimum capabilities
through some guarantee of minimum income, education, and healthcare, we cannot
say that we have fair competition. When some people have to run a 100 metre
race with sandbags on their legs, the fact that no one is allowed to have a
head start does not make the race fair. Equality of opportunity is absolutely
necessary but not sufficient in building a genuinely fair and efficient
society.”

Equity
and Equality are the two terms which are supposed to be used by people
synonymously but both the terms are different from each other. Equity means to
provide resources to individuals according to their need so they become
successful in their lives whereas equality means distribution of resources in
equal manner or every individual must be given equal opportunity to develop his
innate talent and abilities. Equality implies that before the law, every
citizen is equal to another. The
Constitution of India declares the right to equality as a ‘fundamental right’.
Under
article 14, equality before the law or equal protection of the law is
guaranteed to all. Article 15 works against the discrimination on the grounds of
caste, race, religion, sex or place of birth. Article 16 guarantees equality of
opportunities in cases of public employment which means no citizen shall be
denied admission into any educational institution maintained by the state on any
grounds mentioned in article 15. There are so many other provisions mention in
our constitution to bring equality through equity. They are require in
education sector essentially so students would get the chance to polish their
skills and talent to become successful in life. It helps in stopping wastage
and stagnation, to establish egalitarian society, for economic development, for
national development etc.
