Role of Information Technology in the Field of Agriculture in India


IT deals with the use of technology to retrieve, store and transmit information in various fields such as Banking, Education, Health, Communication, Transport and many more. Not only this, the role of IT in the field of Agriculture is also very significant.  It has the ability to improve decision making in agriculture . Also it  can improve agriculture management and farming technologies. Now a days  use of IT has made significant contribution to  agricultural productivity. There are wide variety of technologies such as  A)Using laser technology which helps in optimizing the use of  fertilizers ,water, seeds and various other inputs. B) Weather forecasts for timely information on Climatic conditions and warning for calamities. C) Also provides facility of online trading.  Various initiatives have been taken for the betterment of production in India such as :
1.Kisan Call Centres:An initiative by Ministry of Agriculture  to answer farmers queries over telephone call ,working in different locations to cover all the States.It consists of a common Toll Free number which  is accessible through mobile phones and landlines. Using this call centres Farmers can get replies their queries  in 22 local languages.
2.E choupal:An initiative by ITC to connect directly with rural farmers using Internet for procurement of agricultural products 
 3.Use of  Geographic Information Systems:It is used in decision making such as where to plant and what to plant using sampling technique. It is also used for Analysis of the soil,  Map creation and various types of Surveying.
 4.Remote Sensing: In Agriculture by the help satellite various information such as Climatic conditions, smog etc is obtained.
5.Uses of Drones :Using Drone Technology for data collection, Survey of Land, Planting of Seeds, use Fertilizers and Pesticides is performed.
The need of the hour is to increase the awareness among Farmers to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for Agricultural purposes.
